News story analysis 2

News 2

this is a story from BBC about the will known figure of Charlie Sheen. This is soft news, with a hint hardness. The image is used because it as if he is waving with no emotion.

This is a saga as every now and then they refresh a list of ridiculous things that he has done.

This story also includes human interest as he has been in a very popular TV show called Two and a Half Men where he was a character very similar to his real life self.

News and Treatment

News and Treatment Values

News Values:

is a theory set by Galtung and Ruge which basically outlines the whole criteria for what is crucial to a news story. Usually, the best and most important news stories are the ones which include all 12 of these values. Whereas, all of the side stories will be missing a lot of them. For example, if a huge storm destroyed half of England it would be a huge story and i would relate to everyone. On the other hand, if a huge storm destroyed half of Kazakhstan it probably wouldnt make it as the main story on British news. Here are a couple of examples of news values:
  • Immediacy - has the even recently happened?
  • Familiarity - is this story instantly recognisable?

Treatment Values:

Is a theory set by Graham Burton in 1990 which basically sets the criteria for what a journalist should include in their story. They include these to engage the audience and ensure they continue to watch. There are 6 treatment values including:
  • Visuals - things like videos and pictures
  • Human Interest - things that would interest
