News and Treatment Values
News Values:
is a theory set by Galtung and Ruge which basically outlines the whole criteria for what is crucial to a news story. Usually, the best and most important news stories are the ones which include all 12 of these values. Whereas, all of the side stories will be missing a lot of them. For example, if a huge storm destroyed half of England it would be a huge story and i would relate to everyone. On the other hand, if a huge storm destroyed half of Kazakhstan it probably wouldnt make it as the main story on British news. Here are a couple of examples of news values:
- Immediacy - has the even recently happened?
- Familiarity - is this story instantly recognisable?
Treatment Values:
Is a theory set by Graham Burton in 1990 which basically sets the criteria for what a journalist should include in their story. They include these to engage the audience and ensure they continue to watch. There are 6 treatment values including:
- Visuals - things like videos and pictures
- Human Interest - things that would interest
